All teachers live on Koh Samui and have work permits. Qualifications are available upon request.

 

Rozalind:  Head Teacher 

Born in England Roz has a BA Honours in English from Lancaster University. She also has a PGCE in Primary Education.  In 2001 she received the T.E.F.L Certification. Roz has had considerable teaching experience in Taiwan and UK including Cambridge Schools.  She has run Teaching workshops and has completed English Tutoring for all ages and abilities. Roz is one of the founders of the Samui School and is responsible for overseeing all curriculum used at the Centre. Her passion is ballet which Roz has also taught at the Joy American School in Taiwan.

 

                             Key Stage Two Teacher (7-11years)   Kevin  

Kevin is from the UK and gained a BA/BSC with Q.T.S specializing in Maths, Art and P.E from Bath Spa University College in 2001.  He worked for two years at Combe Down Primary School in England as a Year 6 and Year 4 class teacher, also taking on the roles of resource manager and P.E Coordinator.  In 2004 Kevin relocated to the Kings School Dubai to be a Year 3 class teacher, where he was a Design and Technology coordinator and advanced mathematics teacher.  Kevin has actively participated in a variety of after school activities such as tennis, football, cross-stitch, cooking, theatre/musical productions, sports coaching and the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

 

Cara   Reception Teacher (4-5 years)

Cara is from the UK where she gained a BSC (Hons) in Geography from Loughborough University in 2000.  She then attended the College of Ripon and Saint John and gained a PGCE in Primary Education in 2001.  Cara then attended Leeds Metropolitan University and gained a PGCE in Early Years and Professional Development.  Cara has had extensive teaching experience in the Foundation Stage 1 and 2 classes.  She has been involved in redeveloping planning and assessment formats, developing Foundation Stage Policy Documents, re-developing the Literacy and Numeracy programs and coordinating Geography throughout her school.  Cara then relocated to the Kings School Dubai in 2004 where she has been a Foundation stage 1 and 2 class teacher.  She has been involved in many extra-curricular activities, such as Environment Club, Music and Dance Club, Cheerleading and School Council.  Cara particularly enjoys being involved in theatre productions, music and choregraphy.

                                                       

                                                   Management/Teacher  Rachel

Rachel gained University Entrance "B" Bursary in 1994 and went on to gain the Certificate in Business and Computing from the New Zealand Institute of Education.  Currently part way through a BSC in Biology at Auckland University. Also one of the founders of the Centre, Rachel has had a leading role in the management and Administration of the School as well as teaching the Nursery class for the last two and half years.

 
 

Emma   Nursery Teacher/Advisor

Emma is from the UK. She has studied Dance at University College Scarborough and is currently part-way through a research based degree in multi-lingual and multi-cultural families with the University of Anglia.  Emma has been in Thailand since 2001, where she has taught in various roles including English Camp Advisor, Private Tutor for pre-school children and dance Teacher at the International Pre-School Centre in Bangkok.  After a brief spell back in the UK during which time Emma taught as a supply teacher in a number of establishments including Special Educational Needs, she returned to Thailand. Emma now lives on Koh Samui and is a partner in the school.

Teacher  Grace

Grace has been employed by the School for 2 years. She has a Bachelor of Arts in English with a Supplemental Unit in Education from Roosevelt College. Grace has had extensive teaching experience in Kindergartens in her native country, the Philippines, as well as in Thailand. She has participated in various summer English camps as well as private tutoring for pre-school children.  Grace also plays piano and enjoys singing. She is an integral part of our family here at the School.


 

Ms Jariya Buayam (Aw)  Thai Teacher

Aw studied at Rajabhat Maha Sarakham University where she gained her Bachelor of Education - Science of Education - Thai Language - Pedagogy. She worked for 4 years at Phuwengvitthayakom School in Khonkhan and then went on to work at Saint Joseph School on Koh Samui for 2 years.  She is now Head of Thai Language at the Samui Centre of Learning and will also be offering classes in traditional Thai Dance.

Consultant Teacher  Brenda

 

Brenda .. the mother of two children, is a qualified teacher (TDipT, TDipPS) and has been teaching in New Zealand since 1985. Since 1995 she has gained wide experience in Home Schooling groups and teaching young children. Brenda and her family, spend regular time in Thailand ... and she has been instrumental in assisting with the ideas and philosophy of Samui School of Learning..... " young children are perfect sponges, soaking up knowledge, seeking boundaries and a measure of where they fit in the world " she says... " their trust is the key, turn it, and they seek your knowledge and move beyond their limitations "

Information on the New Teachers

Pre Nursery Class Teacher: Sarah Gladwin

Sarah is a qualified Nursery Nurse and Teaching assistant at Level 3, gaining a distinction certificate at the end of the two year course.  She also gained distinction in CACHE level 2 in childcare and education.  During both courses she has worked with children aged 0-8 years.  She has worked at various Primary Schools, private nurseries, pre-nurseries. She has also spent time working with children with special needs.

Foundation 2 Class Teacher:  Pia Toftesjo

In 2001 Pia gained  a Bachelor of Education specializing  in Child and Youth Education.  In December 2001 Pia worked as a preschool teacher at the Mariebergsgatans Preschool for one year.  She then went on to teach at the Haga Preschool working with children aged 1-6 years.  She has worked as a support for children with special needs and also taught extra classes to children aged between 6-12 years of age at various schools including Oscar Fredricskolan and Nordhemsskolan.  She enjoys music ( can play some guitar) drawing and travel.

Key Stage 1 (year 2):  Ursula Watson

In 1997 Ursula gained a BA(Hons) in Economics and Literature for the University of Manchester.  In 2006 she gained her PGCE (Primary). Ursula has gained working practice in various schools in England including Vyner Primary School,  Oxton St. Saviours Primary School, Greenfields County Primary School, Woodlands Nursery, St. Sebastians Primary School and Seedley Primary School. During her placements she has taught year groups 1-3 and was graded as outstanding for her teaching practices. Ursula has been involved in Literacy and mentoring schemes in schools for several years and also has experience in planning and implementing curriculum and developing monitoring assessment strategies.  Her interests include Netball and football in which she has completed training courses in both sports.

Key Stage 2 (year 3 & 4): Sian Ennis

Sian was born in England and has a BA Hons in cotemporary Arts from Nottingham Trent University. In 2006 she attended Prague Schools where she received the Trinity TESOL certificate.  Since then she has gained considerable experience teaching English at language camps to a whole range of Nationalities including Italian, Russian and Japanese.

She then completed a PGCE in Primary Education through Nottingham University.  She completed placements at St. Bede's Primary School as a Year 6 student teacher and has gained extensive experience in developing, planning and implementing aspects of the National Literacy strategy.  She also completed her placement at Westgarth Primary School as a Year 1 student teacher.  Sian has extensive knowledge of current educational practices in the National curriculum and experience in integrating QCA documents through theme based learning.  Sian particularly enjoys the extra curricular part of school life and has been involved in a variety of activities including art club, dance club and various sports club
